The Royal Mint introduced the British Gold Britannia Series in 1987 featuring a design developed by Philip Nathan. His modern, powerful depiction of Britannia captures the female personification of Britain standing guard along the coast of England ready to ward off all invaders. The series launched with 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and these 1/10 oz gold coins that year. It wasnt until 2013 that two new weights were added. These included a 5 oz gold coin and a 1/20 oz gold coin that became the smallest option in the series.
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse of 1/10 oz British Gold Britannia Coins. This is the definitive fifth-generation effigy of Her Majesty to feature on British coins and was designed in 2015 by Jody Clark. The right-profile image of the Queen shown here depicts her at the age of 89 as she wears the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The design field includes the Royal Mints guilloche background element as a built-in anti-counterfeiting feature of the coin.
Britannia stands powerful and resilient in the reverse design of the British Gold Britannia. The image of Britannia was first struck on coins issued in Britain nearly 2,000 years ago during the 1st century CE when the Romans issued coins with her effigy. She is shown here in a modern design with a trident in one hand, a Corinthian helmet on her head, and an olive branch in the other hand as it rests upon a shield emblazoned with the Union Jack.
