Unlike most other coins of the time, the Indian Half Eagle contained a unique incuse design. This means that the design is sunk into the coin, as opposed to being raised above its surface. This gives the coins a totally unique design and differentiates it from many others minted during this time. The design for the Indian Half Eagle was created by Bela Lyon Pratt and contains the same images featured on the $2.50 Indian Gold Quarter Eagle Coin.
On the coins obverse is the image of a left-facing Native American chieftain. In the design, he is featured wearing a traditional Native American headdress. Directly below the portrait is the abbreviation BLP in small letters to denote the artist with the minting year stamped directly underneath. The word LIBERTY is inscribed above with a series of 13 stars encircling it.
On the reverse of the coin is a large bald eagle perched upon a bundle of arrows with an olive branch in its right talon. To the left and right of the bird are the phrases E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST respectively. Above the eagle is the name of our country which is spelled out as UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, while the legal tender value is stamped below as FIVE DOLLARS.
