British Lunar Silver Coins
The British Lunar Silver coin series is a collection issued by the Royal Mint since 2014, featuring the Chinese zodiac in celebration of Chinese New Year, in varying denominations of silver and gold, as both bullion and proof.
The series is also called Shēngxiào (生肖) and features a monarch effigy on its obverse. Till 2023, it featured Her Majesty, the late Queen Elizabeth II, and the 2024 version, designed by Martin Jennings, features His Majesty the King Charles III.
The British Lunar Silver coin series is based on 12 animals to represent the 12-sign cycle of the Chinese zodiac. It includes the Year of the Horse 2014, Year of the Sheep 2015, Year of the Monkey 2016, Year of the Rooster 2017, Year of the Dog 2018, Year of the Pig 2019, Year of the Rat 2020, Year of the Ox 2021, Year of the Tiger 2022, Year of the Rabbit 2023, Year of the Dragon 2024, and Year of the Snake 2025.
As the names of the coins suggest, the 12-coin series depict 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac on the reverse, including the only mythical animal of the series the Dragon. Designers Ian Rank-Broadley and Jody Clark worked on the designs, with the former the Horse and the Sheep, and the latter designing the rest of the animals (excluding the 2024 coin.)
Seated Britannia Silver Coin
The Seated Britannia silver coins are British bullion and proof coins issued by the Royal Mint since 1997. It was originally issued in gold from 1987 and has also been minted in platinum since 2018.
The coins contain five, one, one-half, one-quarter, one-tenth, and one-twentieth of a troy ounce of gold and have face values of £10, £2, £1, 50p, 20p, and 10p respectively. The obverse features a monarch effigy with the legend around it.
The reverse of the coin features various depictions of Britannia-the national personification of the United Kingdom- a helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield. From 2013, the proof versions of the coin feature a different design each year, while the bullion version of the coin continue to feature the classic standing Britannia.
The even-numbered year silver Britannia coins depict a standing Britannia figure on the reverse, while the odd-numbered years feature a series of alternate, non-repeating depictions of Britannia on the reverse.
The 2005 and 2007 coins specifically feature a seated Britannia, designed by Philip Nathan and Christopher Le Brun respectively. These Seated Britannia silver coins are similar in design to that used on halfpennies and farthings from 1672, which in turn reflects the original personification of Britannia on Roman coins of Hadrian.
Tudor Beasts Silver Coin
The Royal Tudor Beasts Silver Coin series by the Royal Mint is a British silver coin collection– bullion and proof- showcasing the Queen’s Beasts statues representing the genealogy of Her Majesty the late Queen Elizabeth II.
It includes the Lion of England, the White Greyhound of Richmond, the Yale of Beaufort, the Red Dragon of Wales, the White Horse of Hanover, the White Lion of Mortimer, the Unicorn of Scotland, the Griffin of Edward III, the Black Bull of Clarence, and the Falcon of the Plantagenets.
These 10 statues of heraldic animals stood in front of the temporary western annex to Westminster Abbey for the Queen’s coronation in 1953.
They were modeled on the original King’s Beasts that were commissioned to be sculpted in stone for Henry VIII and his third wife Jane Seymour to represent their ancestry, where they stood on the bridge over a moat at the Hampton Court Palace, near London.
Apart from being released in silver by the Royal Mint since 2016, they are also minted in gold and platinum and designed by the famous British engraver Jody Clark. The silver coin is notable as the first two-ounce British silver bullion coin.
