Designed by the acclaimed sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the extraordinary Gold Double Eagle that bears his name is revered among collectors and investors alike. It was President Theodore Roosevelt who requested Saint-Gaudens for work on a new line of American coins. Upon seeing an exhibition of ancient coins at the Smithsonian, the president desired to see more artistry and minting quality in the production of American coins to match the nations increasing stature and to reflect is ideals as the home of the free.
Each $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (MS66) has been minted with .9675 oz of gold. The elegant design depicts the Lady of Liberty holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. With her hair streaming and her robes flowing, she stands before a blazing sun. Each coin is stamped with its year as well as the inscription Liberty. The obverse side of each coin shows an eagle in flight atop a rising sun. This illustrious design is a marvel to behold.
