Description
To celebrate the bicentennial anniversary of the introduction of the Gold Standard, the British Gold Standard 2021 bullion coin was designed in 2016.
As per the Royal Mint’s website, the Gold Standard range now includes both a one ounce and quarter-ounce bullion coin struck in 999.9 fine gold.
Coin Highlights:
- Produced by the Royal Mint of Great Britain and struck to its bullion standard
- Contains one troy ounce of 999.9 fine gold
- Obverse features the original Gold Standard design by Dominique Evans
- Reverse features a right-facing effigy of Queen Elizabeth II
- Fully backed by the British government
- Carries a face value of 100 GBP and has a 32.69 mm diameter
The crowned old bust of the Queen’s image wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem crown worn for her Coronation (effigy known as the “Fifth Portrait”) and the Coronation Necklace on the obverse has been designed by British engraver Jody Clark.
The coin pays tribute to Britain tying the value of the British pound to that of gold in 1821, by fixing the Sovereign, a circulating gold coin that changed the financial system in Britain through The Coinage Act of 1816, to a precise measurement of gold.
