The renowned Double Eagle design was originally introduced by the U.S. Mint in 1850. Since that time it has become one of the nations most iconic coin designs. Minted as the result of the California Gold Rush, this celebrated coin represents a bygone era in U.S. history. As gold began to pour into the nations treasury, the United States Congress decided to pass legislation in 1849 to create this new coin. James Barton Longacre, the revered engraver, was tapped to create the coins design. The $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle has since become the nations largest circulating gold coin.
Each $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle (MS63) reflects the heraldic eagle with a shield held on its breast. The shield is adorned with a ring of thirteen stars that represent the original colonies. Additionally, the design was influenced by the nations Great Seal. The coins obverse side reflects Lady Liberty, a design based on a Greco-Roman sculpture. She is wearing a pearl-encrusted coronet inscribed with the word Liberty. Each of these coins has been minted with .9675 oz of gold.
