Introduced in 1850, the iconic Double Eagle design has become an icon of American coinage. This celebrated coin was first minted as the result of the California Gold Rush. As gold began to pour into the nations coffers, Congress passed legislation to create the Double Eagle coin in 1849. The noted engraver James Barton Longacre created the now-renowned design that eventually became the countrys largest circulating gold coin. Every $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle (MS64) showcases a heraldic eagle with a shield on its breast. The shield boasts a ring of thirteen stars this signify the original 13 Colonies. This design was also modeled after the nations Great Seal. The obverse side of the Gold Double Eagle shows Lady Libertya design influenced by a Greco-Roman sculpture.
