Buy Gold Coins like the White Greyhound of Richmond originated as a badge of John of Gaunt in the 14th century used in the Honor of Richmond to support the badge through the Royal Arms.
John of Gaunt was the 1st Duke of Lancaster and served as a steward/earl for the Honor of Richmond.
The Gold British Queens Beast 0.25-oz White Greyhound 2021 remained associated with the Honor of Richmond for the next century until Edmund Tudor was created Earl of Richmond.
Edmund Tudor was the father of King Henry VII, victor in the Wars of the Roses and the first monarch in the House of Tudor.
This stunning 2021 quarter-ounce gold coin, showcasing the White Greyhound of Richmond, is the tenth release in The Royal Mint’s “Queen’s Beasts” series. These coins are inspired by the ten statues that once stood outside Westminster Abbey during the Queen’s Coronation in 1953, originally sculpted by J. Woodford RA. Each statue symbolizes different royal lineages in the Queen’s ancestry.
The White Greyhound symbolizes John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and Earl of Richmond, father of Henry IV. It stands for honor and is linked to northern England and the Celtic Britons. As with the original statue, the greyhound holds a shield bearing the Tudor Rose, topped with a Royal Crown.
While the original Queen’s Beasts statues are now housed at the Canadian Museum of History in Quebec, stone replicas can be seen at Kew Gardens.
The coin is made from 24-carat gold (999.9 purity) and weighs a quarter of an ounce. Like all British currency, it is exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Both the obverse and reverse were designed by The Royal Mint’s Jody Clark, consistent with the entire series.
