Proof American Gold Eagle Coins were first issued in 1986 with only a 1 oz gold option. In the following year, the United States Mint issued the 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagle for the first time. The 1988 issue year completed the lineup with the introduction of the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof American Gold Eagles.
The United States Mint rarely issues 2-coin Proof Gold Eagle Sets. In this listing, Wall Street Metals offers the 1.5 oz 2-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Sets with the original US Mint box and an included Certificate of Authenticity. Wall Street Metals provides these coins as a random date issue and cannot guarantee the dates marks of the 1 oz and 1/2 oz Proof Gold Eagles available to you today.
On the obverse of all Proof American Gold Eagle Coins is the image of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This image was developed in 1907 by Saint-Gaudens at the behest of President Theodore Roosevelt as he led the nation’s attempt to revamp all of its coin designs. Liberty is depicted in a forward-facing image with the torch held high in her right hand and an olive branch in her left hand.
This image of Lady Liberty is widely regarded as the finest to ever grace the surface of American gold coins. It appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 when the US ended the gold standard.
The reverse face of each Proof American Gold Eagle in this 2-Coin set includes the family of American bald eagles created by Miley Busiek. Designed in 1986 exclusively for the Proof Gold Eagle, this image includes a male eagle in flight over the family nest as a female eagle shelters a young hatchling under her wing.
