Description
Silvertowne Buffalo silver rounds are one of America’s greatest classic coin designs and are often referred to as the Buffalo Nickel. Originally, in its day, this coin was also referred to as the Indian Head Nickel, but times change. However, the love for this fantastic piece of American history has not, and it’s popularity has continued to skyrocket over the past century.
Silvertowne Buffalo silver rounds design comes from James Earle Fraser and originally, they were used on the nation’s 5-cent piece way back in the early days of the 20th century, from 1913 to 1938 to be precise.
Today, Silvertowne Buffalo silver rounds are replicated on countless products ranging from the US Mints American Gold Buffalo coin to silver rounds of many different variations.

The Buffalo Nickel debuted from the United States Mint way back in 1913. It was designed by James Earle Fraser during the administration of William H. Taft, and Fraser brought his life’s experience growing up on the plains of Minnesota and the Dakotas to bear in the design. A native of Winona, Minnesota, Fraser travelled extensively throughout the region in the late 19th century with his father, encountering the American bison and interacting with Native American tribes on his many travels. This is a unique piece of American history for this reason, and sums up life at the time and the values of the nation as a whole.
On the obverse of the 1 oz Silvertowne Buffalo Silver Round is the right-profile portrait of a Native American. In the upper-right portion of the design fields edge is an engraving of Liberty. Fraser would not say for decades who the inspiration was for this Native American design, eventually admitting that he combined the facial and physical features of three individuals to create the image.
The reverse of all Buffalo Silver Rounds includes the left-profile of an American bison standing on an outcrop patch of dirt. His original bison design was based upon Black Diamond, a resident of New York City’s Central Park Zoo in the early 20th century. Engravings on this side also remain similar to the Buffalo Nickel, with United States of America and E Pluribus Unum above the bison. Instead of a face value below, you’ll see only the weight, purity, and metal content of the round.
