Why relatively adorable? Leopard seals are predators at the top of the food chain, eating all sizes of fish and birds as they swim around the Antarctic region of Australia’s waters. As such, this happily-swimming, wide-eyed rendition of the seal brings an almost cute flavor to this unusual coin.
The seal is featured as part of the Perth Mint’s ongoing series of bullion coins depicting various Australian animals. Since 2018, the mint has been creating the coins in celebration of the diversity of wildlife the island continent and its nearby waters are home to.
On the facing side of the coin rests a masterful portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, as depicted by artist Jody Clark. Known as the fifth rendition globally (and the sixth in Australia, following Vladimir Gottwald’s official effigy), this portrait was released in 2015 when the Queen became the longest ruling monarch in Britain’s history. The Queen wears the Royal Diamond Diadem and the Coronation Necklace (first made for Queen Victoria in 1858).
Around the Queen’s portrait are the words: ELIZABETH II AUSTRALIA 1/3oz 9995 Pt 2020 30 DOLLARS, signifying the name of the monarch being featured, the platinum metal content, the year made, and the legal currency value of the coin.
With no new official coin series carrying Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait in the future, this is a rare opportunity to purchase this limited edition 2020 coin.
