Revered as one of the most beautiful American coins, the $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle is regarded as a high point of American minting practices and design. This extraordinary coin was designed by the world-famous sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens, whose name now accompanies these highly-sought-after coins. President Theodore Roosevelt requested that Saint-Gaudens design new American coins after the president was inspired by a Smithsonian exhibition of ancient coins. The president wanted a new line of coins that reflected the grandeur of the country and to celebrate its greatness.
Each $20 Saint Gaudens Gold Double Eagle (MS64) has been produced with .9675 oz of gold. The design reflects the Lady of Liberty who bears a torch in one hand and an olive branch in her other hand. Her streaming hair and gown complement the design as she stands before a blazing sun. Each coin is also inscribed with the word Liberty as well as the year of minting. The obverse side of each coin depicts an eagle in flight above a sun. Its no surprise why this coin continues to attract both investors and collectors.
