Description
Introduced in 1986, the coins were groundbreaking at the time. The Gold Eagle was the first gold coin issued by the US Mint since 1933 when the nation left the gold standard and ceased issuing gold coins into circulation. More importantly, the Gold Eagle was the first US coin since 1837 to have a purity level above .900 gold content.
The United States Mint offers the American Gold Eagle coins in a total of four different weights. The 1 oz gold coin and 1/10 oz coin are often the most popular, with the 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz coin still attracting their fair share of interest from gold buyers.

On the obverse of American Gold Eagles is the design of Lady Liberty created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. This design depicts Liberty in front-facing relief as she marches forward from the nations capital in Washington DC with a torch held high in her right hand and a large olive branch in her left hand. The image appeared on the $20 Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933.
The reverse of 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins includes an exclusive design created in 1986 by Miley Busiek. The image includes a male eagle in flight over the nest with an olive branch in its talons. In the nest, a female eagle extends its wing to offer shelter to a hatchling.
All American Gold Eagle coins are struck by the United States Mint. Among the four US Mint facilities, the West Point Mint facility has the sole responsibility of coining the American Gold Eagles.
